Thank you for your support!
As many of you know, I am currently on a pilgrimage with my wife to Egypt, her holy land.
Prior to our arrival, I was warned about how dangerous and “bad” this place was. Family and friends were concerned for our safety and voiced those fears, often and loudly. The Egypt that we found couldn’t be more different than the fictional place everyone worried themselves over.
My personal goal for this trip was to gain a better understanding of the people. I hoped to see through the tourist attractions and instead witness the normal, everyday lives of the citizens. I wanted to be immersed in the culture. To that end, I went off on my own to experience it for myself.
I have found most here are loving and caring people who have barely anything but still welcome me, a stranger, into their homes with open arms and the promise of a good meal. They expect nothing in return. Through these excursions, I have met many interesting individuals and set the foundation for friendships I suspect will be lifelong.
That said, I do have a major pull on my heart. Those who have enough (and by “enough,” I mean they are just scraping by with enough to survive) have a head of household who works two jobs with long hours just to feed the family. I have been told by several people here that the average family spends fifty to sixty percent of their salary just on food. That is not eating at a restaurant or grabbing takeout five nights a week. We are talking about buying meats and vegetables from the local market to prepare daily meals at home. Many others simply do not have enough food to sustain them. They live in houses that most Americans would not even enter, much less live in. Don’t get me wrong, they are all happy and thankful for what they have, but to go days without eating is a major problem.
In the following months, I plan to do all that I can to feed and otherwise help the people of Egypt. The primary need I am seeing is in the homes of widowed women with children and elderly women, so that is where I will focus my efforts. These are proud people who expect nothing and are being given even less. There is no government support here. No food stamps. No food banks. No access to proper medical care.
We know that times are tough for everyone, but we hope those who are able to will step up to help us in this mission. Soon, Brandy will apply for grants and the Coven will begin collecting donations, 100% of which will fund support efforts in Egypt. We have a loving and generous community. I have no doubt you all will give as much as you can. In the meantime, Brandy and I will continue building relationships with people here already doing the work and giving what little they have to support their neighbors, to ensure the funds we raise go exactly where they are needed most.
When we set out, we expected this to be a once-in-a-lifetime type of trip. Seeing the pyramids up close, visiting ancient holy sites, cruising riverboats up and down the Nile… It all sounded like some grand adventure. And all of that stuff really is as cool as I’d hoped it would be. But that’s not what Egypt is about. That’s not who it is. On the other side of the thin, tourist-trap veneer are people who call Egypt home. It’s them who make this place so special.
I arrived in this land excited and, if I’m being honest, a little nervous. I will leave humbled and forever changed.
